Lately antioxidant rich foods became very popular. Everyone is talking how antioxidant products and antioxidant vitamins and supplements can improve health and prevent diseases.

However, not many of us know there are natural dietary antioxidant supplements in form of nutritious whole foods that supply your body with everything needed. Some of these superfoods are berries, vitamin C rich fruits and vegetable, cereals and many more.

So what are the antioxidants and why
are they important?

In short, antioxidants are molecules that are capable of inhibiting the oxidation of other molecules. When they enter our body they prevent our cells from oxidation i.e. damage and rapid aging. Therefore, including natural antioxidant products into your diet will protect your cells, promote health and prolong life.

Antioxidants are available in different kind of food, but ordinarily they are found in whole fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds. The three major antioxidant vitamins (i.e. vitamins that contain antioxidant molecules) are beta-carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E.

Where to Get Antioxidants?

You do not have to turn to antioxidant supplements advertised at your pharmacy vitamins isle or buy expensive bottles acai berry juices.

There are many fresh and unprocessed antioxidant foods that you can find at your local supermarket. I, of course, recommend choosing all natural and organic products to ensure you get the most nutrients from your food.

You will find largest amounts of dietary antioxidants in colorful fruits and vegetables – especially those with purple, blue, red, orange, and yellow hues. To get the biggest benefits of antioxidants you should eat your vegetable and fruits raw.

TIP

The best way to cook your vegetables and legumes is to either stew them or boil them in already boiled water. Boiled water is oxygen free; therefore, if you cook your vegetables in it the valuable vitamins and other nutrients will not get destroyed! Simply bring your water to a boil and only then add your veggies.

Generally, foods containing antioxidants are essential for a healthy diet. So if you eat whole, unprocessed foods and maintain healthy eating habits you will get enough antioxidants to stay healthy and keep your immune system strong.
